Knee Osteoarthritis in Stockport — There’s More Between Painkillers and Surgery Than You Think

Knee Osteoarthritis in Stockport — There’s More Between Painkillers and Surgery Than You Think

We hear it all the time.

“My GP said to take ibuprofen and come back when it’s bad enough for a knee replacement.”

If that’s where you’ve landed, we want you to know — there is a middle ground. A genuinely effective one. And it’s available right here in Stockport.

Hyaluronic acid injection therapy is one of the most underutilised treatments in knee osteoarthritis management. Not because it doesn’t work — the evidence says it does — but simply because many patients are never told it exists.

Not sure what hyaluronic acid injection therapy actually is? Start here first — it covers the basics, how it differs from a steroid injection, and who tends to benefit most.

Why Knees With OA Hurt the Way They Do

In a healthy knee, synovial fluid rich in hyaluronic acid acts as both lubricant and shock absorber. In an arthritic knee, that fluid breaks down — it becomes thinner, less effective, and every step causes more friction, more wear, and more pain.

Viscosupplementation directly addresses this by restoring the quality of fluid inside the joint. It’s not a painkiller masking the problem. It’s working with the joint’s own biology to improve the environment it’s operating in.

What the Evidence Shows

HA injections for knee OA are backed by multiple systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Corticosteroid injections tend to act faster in the early weeks — and sometimes that’s exactly what a joint needs first. But HA injections come into their own from around 8 weeks onwards, with effects that can last 6 months or longer in well-selected patients. For some good responders, that extends to 12 months.

That sustained duration is what makes them such a valuable option for people trying to stay active and avoid surgery. And it’s why we think carefully about which HA product is right for each patient — not just whether to use one.

The Products We Use for Knee OA

For knee osteoarthritis specifically, we often find ourselves reaching for Durolane — a single-injection HA product that uses cross-linked, non-animal sourced technology to stay active in the joint longer than standard formulations. Clinical studies consistently support meaningful relief at 6 months, and for good responders we’ve seen that extend considerably further.

That said, Durolane isn’t always the answer. Depending on your assessment — particularly if there’s an inflammatory component alongside your OA — we might recommend Sinogel, which combines HA with an antioxidant to protect against joint inflammation, or one of our other specialist formulations.

The product decision is part of the clinical conversation, not an afterthought.

Are You a Good Candidate?

The best outcomes tend to come from patients who:

  • Have mild-to-moderate knee OA — confirmed on X-ray or through clinical assessment
  • Are looking to stay active and delay surgery rather than waiting it out
  • Have tried physio and medication but want more sustained relief
  • Are not currently in a severe acute flare — if the joint is very hot and swollen right now, we’d likely start with a steroid to settle things first, then consider HA once things calm down
  • Are medically stable with no active joint infection or bleeding disorder

Not sure which box you’re in? That’s exactly what your consultation is for.

What Your Appointment Looks Like

We start with a proper conversation.

We want to know your history, your symptoms, what you’ve already tried, what your day actually looks like, and what you want to get back to. We review any imaging you have and factor all of that in.

We make a decision together.

Whether that’s HA, corticosteroid, a combination approach, or something else entirely — you’ll understand the reasoning and you’ll be part of the choice.

The injection takes minutes.

Landmark-guided or ultrasound-guided depending on your presentation. Most patients are back to normal activity within 24–48 hours.

We follow you up.

Your response tells us a lot. We track how you do, adjust the plan if needed, and think ahead with you — not just react to flares.
